About the Arranger: Paul Langford

Paul Langford

Paul Langford is a Hong Kong-born, Chicago-based musician whose three decades of creative work span composition, arrangement, orchestration, and conducting. His published scores appear through major imprints including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, Shawnee Press, Oxford University Press, and Walton Music, and have been performed by orchestras across North America as well as ensembles ranging from Disney parks to international choirs and jazz bands.

Beyond the page, Langford has worked as a session and live performer alongside Grammy Award-winning artists including David Foster, Josh Groban, Celine Dion, and Michael Bublé, and has performed for multiple U.S. Presidents. He directs Paul Langford Studios, a full-service recording facility in the Chicago area, and maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and music director for ensembles across the country and internationally.

Why we love this

Langford finds the heart in this beloved Muppets standard without overselling it. The SAB voicing sits in a genuinely singable range, the harmony moves with purpose, and the arrangement respects what makes the song work in the first place: its earnest simplicity and its message. Your singers will connect with material this genuine.

What to expect

This arrangement wraps you in warmth. The harmonies are open and honest, the vocal lines sit comfortably, and the overall effect is intimate rather than showy. There's quiet confidence in every note.

Who it's for

Choirs looking for accessible three-part mixed voicing that carries real emotional weight without excessive technical demand. Works equally well for middle school ensembles developing blend and musicianship or high school choirs seeking repertoire that audiences genuinely love.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat the lyrics as character work. 'Bein' Green' succeeds on sincerity, so encourage your singers to own the humility and acceptance the text expresses rather than performing it lightly.
  • Balance the voices so the melody stays clear even when all three parts are singing. SAB writing can muddy quickly if the alto and baritone push too hard.
  • Let the accompaniment breathe. This isn't a piece that demands relentless energy; find the spaces where silence matters as much as sound.

How to use it

Pair this with other show tunes or contemporary pop-influenced pieces for a concert section that feels current and human. It works as a standalone feature or nestled between heavier classical works to shift the emotional temperature of your program.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing through simple but effective three-part harmony
  • Maintaining text clarity and lyrical phrasing in contemporary arrangement
  • Balancing blend across mixed voices without sacrificing individual line integrity
