About the Composer: Robert W. Smith

Robert W. Smith has established himself as a defining voice in American concert band and orchestral composition, with over 400 works published primarily through Alfred Music. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Troy State University in Alabama and completed graduate study at the University of Miami, Florida.
Smith's original compositions and arrangements have traveled globally, performed by ensembles across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. His works span concert settings and high-profile broadcasts, from the opening of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to the Olympic Games. As both composer and clinician, he continues to shape the developing ensemble repertoire with pieces that have become teaching standards.
Why we love this
Two master educators designed this warm-up with the specific demands of novice musicians in mind. Rather than patching together disconnected exercises, Smith and Smith created a single-page routine that addresses the foundational elements your students need most: tone, intonation, articulation, flexibility, dexterity, and musical expression. You get efficiency without sacrifice.
What to expect
Purposeful and grounded. The writing respects the early-stage musician without condescension, giving them material that sounds musical while they're building basic skills. There's a calm efficiency to how the exercises progress.
Who it's for
Beginning band directors managing mixed instrument proficiency and limited rehearsal time. This warm-up works equally well for middle school programs and adult community bands with novice players, where getting everyone on the same page acoustically and rhythmically matters most.
How to get the most out of it
- Open each rehearsal with this same routine for three weeks before rotating to a new warm-up. Consistency builds muscle memory and lets students focus on the musical content rather than deciphering new patterns.
- Use the conductor score to spot individual intonation issues as the full band plays through. The simplicity of the material makes it easier to hear who needs individual attention.
- Space the warm-up across 8-10 minutes. Resist the urge to rush through it; the pacing is what makes the work on tone quality and expression possible.
How to use it
Make this the opening ritual of every rehearsal during the first month of the school year, when foundational tone and intonation habits are set. Return to it whenever you notice collective tuning drift or when articulation clarity starts slipping in faster literature.
Skills your students will build
- Tone production across the dynamic range
- Ensemble intonation matching
- Clear articulation (tonguing placement and release)
- Harmonic flexibility and pitch adjustment
- Technical facility in scalar patterns
- Sustained musical phrasing and expression
