More about this title

About the Composer: Don Besig

Don Besig

Don Besig spent 31 years directing music in public schools across western New York, building award-winning concert choirs and show choirs that performed extensively at festivals, competitions, and community venues. His work spans all age levels and settings, from middle school through adult choirs, giving him deep insight into what singers actually need.

Recognizing that student and volunteer choirs deserved music written with their voices in mind, Besig began composing for his own ensembles. That vision has expanded dramatically: over 350 of his original compositions and arrangements are now published by major school and church music houses, with sales exceeding 15 million copies worldwide. He has received multiple ASCAP Special Awards and continues to work as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator across 40 states and Canada. Besig holds a degree from Ithaca College and maintains active memberships in ACDA, MENC, and NYSSMA.

Why we love this

Besig has an unmistakable gift for writing seasonal music that feels fresh rather than recycled, and this Christmas carol has genuine warmth without sentimentality. The SATB voicing sits comfortably for mixed choirs at the high school and community level, and the 13 pages suggest a piece with real substance that doesn't overstay its welcome.

What to expect

The title promises something tender and celebratory, grounded in the accessibility Besig is known for. There's room for genuine ensemble singing without technical barriers getting in the way of making music together.

Who it's for

This piece works for mixed choirs at the secondary level and above, including community and church ensembles. Any group comfortable with SATB writing and looking to add an approachable but musically satisfying Christmas selection will find this useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with gentle peaks rather than straight singing; let the text naturally guide your phrase direction and weight.
  • Balance the inner voices so they support rather than compete with the soprano line, which will help the harmonic progression come through clearly.
  • Approach dynamic markings as suggestions for color and intent, not absolute volume; the piece rewards subtle shifts in intensity that follow the emotional arc.

How to use it

Include this as a shorter work on a December concert program alongside larger choral works, or program it early in your holiday rehearsal schedule when singers are still developing their ensemble blend. It also serves well for church or community performances where a single, polished piece might be more appropriate than an extended program.

Skills your students will build

  • SATB blend and balance
  • Sustained singing through longer phrases
  • Text interpretation in a seasonal context
  • Accurate harmonic function and intonation in major key progressions
