About the Arranger: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck leads Alfred Music's choral publications division and has placed over 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals in active circulation. He holds degrees in Music Education from both Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, and his scholarly work includes three widely adopted resources: Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique.

Beyond the page, Beck maintains an active performance and conducting career. He serves as a guest conductor, choreographer, adjudicator, and clinician across the United States and internationally, with recent commissions from all-state and honor choirs throughout the Southeast. A tenor vocalist himself, he directs musical theatre productions, sings with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir, and has contributed as an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992. His YouTube presence confirms what music teachers already know: his arrangements resonate with singers of all ages around the world.

Why we love this

Beck's gift for pop choral arranging shines here. This medley captures the infectious energy of contemporary hits while remaining fully grounded in accessible vocal writing, which means your singers will sound polished without requiring years of technique development. Programming material that genuinely excites your students creates momentum in rehearsal and fills seats at concerts, and this arrangement delivers both.

What to expect

Fresh, energetic, and familiar. The medley format strings together recognizable melodies that resonate with singers' own listening lives, creating a bridge between the music they love outside rehearsal and the choral experience. It feels celebratory rather than studious.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for middle school, high school, and community choirs seeking contemporary repertoire with immediate cultural relevance. Singers drawn to pop music find authentic material here, which naturally increases engagement and attendance in rehearsals and performances.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build energy through the medley arc rather than staying at one dynamic level; allow sections to breathe and reset between hits so the final chorus lands with impact.
  • Lock the rhythmic precision of the accompaniment track during early rehearsals to establish a secure foundation before layering in musicality and interpretation.
  • Encourage singers to connect emotionally to the lyrics and melodic shapes rather than treating this as purely technical material; pop music thrives on authenticity.
  • Experiment with light choreography or simple staging gestures that match the song's contemporary feel without requiring extensive production support.

How to use it

Program this as a set piece in a spring concert to bookend a more traditional first half, or use it as the centerpiece of a popular music showcase that draws family members and friends who might not otherwise attend choral events. The medley format makes it a natural crowd closer.

Skills your students will build

  • Stylistically accurate interpretation of contemporary popular music phrasing
  • Coordinating vocal blend while maintaining distinct melodic lines in a medley format
  • Singing with rhythmic flexibility and groove alongside a recorded accompaniment
  • Building dynamic contrast and shape across multiple song sections
