About the Composer: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin balances an active composing career with mentoring accomplished students, having led workshops and masterclasses across the United States, Canada, Japan, and Taiwan. She holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree with distinction from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music degree from Oakland University School of Performing Arts.

Rollin's compositional work has garnered significant recognition, including commissions from Clavier Companion, the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the Michigan Music Teachers Association. Her compositions appear regularly in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin, and she has judged at the national level for both the MTNA Student Composition Competition and the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. In 2018, MTNA commissioned Suite Detroit, a trio for flute, alto saxophone, and piano that premiered at the national conference; that same year, the Steinway Society featured her in concert as both composer and pianist, highlighting her ASCAP award-winning Museum Masterpieces series.

Why we love this

Rollin writes with a pianist's understanding of what works under the hands, creating pieces that feel rewarding to learn and perform without sacrificing musical substance. Her autumn-inspired writing captures genuine mood and atmosphere while respecting the intermediate player's developing technique.

What to expect

Autumn Mood carries the warmth and gentle melancholy of the season, with harmonic colors that suggest changing leaves and shorter days. The piece balances introspection with a sense of calm acceptance, creating a reflective space for both performer and listener.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists seeking repertoire that captures a specific season and mood while reinforcing solid technique. This piece works well for students who respond to descriptive, evocative music and who are ready to think about atmosphere and interpretation alongside mechanics.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrasing around the natural contours of the melody rather than playing mechanically measure to measure; let breath marks guide your interpretation even though this is keyboard music
  • Balance the accompaniment texture so it supports rather than overshadows the main voice; listen for the harmonic colors Rollin creates underneath
  • Work on evenness in any scalar or rippling passages before worrying about tempo; accuracy at a comfortable speed builds confidence and allows musical intent to emerge

How to use it

This fits naturally into a fall recital or school concert, whether programmed on its own or paired with other seasonal character pieces. Its four-page length makes it substantial enough to stand alone on a student recital while remaining accessible for intermediate-level students preparing their first public performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Pedal control and color awareness
  • Phrasing and musical shape in solo repertoire
  • Handling block chords and arpeggiated textures with evenness
  • Communicating mood through tempo and dynamic choices
