About the Composer: Imant Raminsh

Imant Raminsh

Imant Raminsh has spent a lifetime creating music across genres, from chamber works to large symphonic scores. Born in Latvia in 1943 and relocated to Canada in 1948, he studied at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, the University of Toronto, Akademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, and the University of British Columbia. His compositions have reached audiences on six continents, performed in spaces ranging from Roy Thomson Hall and Carnegie Hall to venues in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Beijing.

Beyond composition, Raminsh has shaped musical life as the founding conductor of the Prince George Symphony, the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan, NOVA Children's Choir, and AURA Chamber Choir. He made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 2006 and has earned the Outstanding Choral Composition Award from the Association of Canadian Choral Communities and the Distinguished Visiting Alumnus Award from the University of Toronto. In 2007, Latvia honored him with the Order of the Three Stars. A seasonal park naturalist in British Columbia for many summers, Raminsh brings his deep connection to the natural world into his music.
