About the Arranger: Justin Williams

Justin Williams combines deep experience as an arranger with a background in academic disciplines, holding degrees in Political Science and History from Jacksonville State University. He has studied composition and arranging with accomplished musicians including Dr. William Jerryl Davis, Patrick Roszell, and Robert W. Smith, developing a craft that now serves over thirty high school band programs nationwide.
As staff arranger for both the Jacksonville State University "Marching Southerners" and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's "Pride of Acadiana" Marching Band, Williams has built a reputation for work performed at major venues: bowl game and BCS championship halftime productions, the Rose Bowl Parade, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Lord Mayor's New Year's Day Parade in London. He currently serves as staff arranger for the Belwin Division of Alfred Music while teaching history and political science at Central Alabama Community College.
Why we love this
Williams captures the exuberance and theatrical energy of these beloved musicals without overcomplicating the band's job. The Grade 3 level means your ensemble can sound polished and confident performing recognizable hits, and the medley format keeps rehearsals focused while delivering a complete concert arc.
What to expect
Stepping into a movie palace where sophisticated melodies and pop sensibility collide. The arrangements sparkle with the optimism of "Dancing Queen," shift into intimate beauty with "Mia and Sebastian's Theme," and explode into the dazzle and attitude of jazz-inflected Broadway. You're not just playing notes; you're channeling the glamour and emotional storytelling these musicals are built on.
Who it's for
Concert bands at the middle school through early high school level seeking contemporary, crowd-pleasing material that students recognize and audiences love. Directors want repertoire that sounds polished without excessive technical demands, and this medley delivers exactly that.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the melodic interest across sections. "Dancing Queen" thrives on a bright, buoyant texture, so avoid letting any one voice dominate; spotlight the melody while keeping accompaniment figures transparent.
- Shape the "Mia and Sebastian's Theme" passage with genuine lyricism. This is the emotional centerpiece of the medley, so encourage sustained playing and sensitive dynamic control from your ensemble.
- Lock the tempo transitions between movements. These musicals thrive on clarity and rhythmic precision, especially where one tune yields to the next.
- Commit fully to the theatrical character of "Overture/And All That Jazz." The style demands energy and articulation that match the Broadway spirit of Chicago.
How to use it
Program this as a standalone feature in a spring or fall concert where you want to showcase modern repertoire and energize your audience with recognizable material. The three-movement structure also works well as a concert closer: it builds momentum while leaving the audience in a celebratory mood.
