Description
Giddy-up little donkey! Hurry, because we're late getting to Bethlehem! The image of the traveler is vividly portrayed in this Spanish children's carol, arranged to depict the clip-clop of the donkey with pizzicato eighth notes and an optional wood block. Students will focus on articulations, dynamics, and the inherent modulations between the verse and the chorus.

About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and her Masters of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, where she specialized in Suzuki pedagogy. She has taught elementary and middle level strings in the Appleton Area School District and cello through the Lawrence University Arts Academy in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Why we love this

Gruselle captures the urgency and humor of a donkey's journey with musical precision. The pizzicato eighth notes do the rhythmic legwork while the arrangement stays accessible for Grade 2 players, making this a piece that builds articulation clarity without sacrificing storytelling.

What to expect

Playful and propulsive, with the urgent clatter of hooves driving beneath a simple, sing-able melody. The modulations between sections create gentle harmonic movement that surprises without overwhelming, and the whole arrangement radiates the specific energy of a character who is decidedly late.

Who it's for

Grade 2 string orchestras ready to tackle articulation work with musicality intact. This piece rewards ensembles comfortable with pizzicato technique and eager to explore how rhythm and dynamics tell a story.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the pizzicato rhythm as an ensemble before adding the melody line; the clip-clop foundation carries the narrative.
  • Shape the dynamics between verse and chorus to highlight the inherent modulations rather than burying them in static volume.
  • If using the optional wood block, rehearse its entrance separately so it sits cleanly under the strings without dominating the texture.

How to use it

Program this for a holiday concert or winter festival where you want a multicultural carol that stands apart from standard fare. Its narrative clarity and transparent arranging make it ideal for a concert that emphasizes student growth, or pair it with other Grade 2 repertoire that builds toward more complex articulation work.

Skills your students will build

  • Pizzicato articulation clarity and rhythmic precision
  • Dynamic contrast between verse and chorus sections
  • Recognition and execution of modulations
  • Ensemble balance when combining pizzicato accompaniment with melody
