More about this title

About the Composer: Ottorino Respighi

Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) stands as one of the most important orchestral composers of the early twentieth century. His gift for orchestration and his fascination with historical music set him apart from his contemporaries; he spent years researching and transcribing works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, breathing new life into pieces that might otherwise have remained obscure.

Respighi's three suites of Ancient Airs and Dances represent some of his most performed and beloved works. Rather than simply arranging historical pieces, he reimagined them for modern orchestra with such artistry and sensitivity that the transcriptions have become canonical. His approach demonstrates how deeply a composer can honor the past while creating something entirely new.

Why we love this

Suite 2 gives orchestras a chance to play genuinely engaging music that audiences recognize and love without demanding the extreme virtuosity of Respighi's more famous works like Pines of Rome. The four movements offer ideal contrast for a concert program: the opening Laura Soave sets a lyrical, intimate tone; Danza Rustica brings rhythmic vitality; the Campanæ Parisienses/Aria provides ethereal color; and Bergamasca closes with spirited dance energy. The reprint's inclusion of transposed parts removes a common scheduling obstacle and makes it accessible to more orchestras.

What to expect

Suite 2 transports listeners to centuries past without ever sounding archaic or academic. Each movement unfolds with natural elegance: the opening floats with Renaissance grace, the rustic dance pulses with earthiness, the aria shimmers with modal color, and the final bergamasca dances with infectious charm. The orchestration glows with period warmth while remaining thoroughly orchestral.

Who it's for

Orchestras at the intermediate to advanced community and school level will find this suite approachable yet musically substantial. It demands solid musicianship and ensemble balance rather than virtuosic technique, making it ideal for orchestras building repertoire confidence and audience appeal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the lute-inspired melodic lines in the upper strings and winds with warmth in the inner voices; Renaissance-era counterpoint can disappear entirely if you let the score collapse toward unison.
  • Allow the harpsichord and harp to establish harmonic foundation without overwhelming the ensemble. Both instruments should be clearly audible but never compete with the primary melodic material.
  • Shape the dance movements (Danza Rustica and Bergamasca) with clear pulse and slight flexibility rather than metronomic rigidity. These feel most alive when the orchestra breathes together through the phrases.

How to use it

Program Suite 2 as a bridge between classical and twentieth-century repertoire, or pair it with other light orchestral works for an accessible concert. Its moderate length (19 minutes) makes it ideal as either a substantial middle-program offering or as part of a thematic concert exploring Renaissance and Baroque sources.

Skills your students will build

  • Transparent orchestration and balance across multiple independent melodic lines
  • Period-style phrasing and articulation in Baroque-era material
  • Coordination of multiple harmonic instruments (harpsichord, harp, strings) in complementary roles
  • Intonation and blend in music structured around modal harmony rather than functional tonality
  • Reading and executing both original and transposed parts accurately
