About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His performance career spans solo recitals and concerto appearances with orchestras across the United States and Mexico, including a featured performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra after winning the Nina Plant Wideman Competition.
These days, Martin channels his artistry into composing and arranging music for worship and choral settings, though he remains an active concert performer. His works have been heard in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to countless churches across North America, and his catalog reflects both the technical sophistication of his classical training and his deep commitment to music's spiritual and communal dimensions.
Why we love this
Martin has written an anthem that actually lives up to the word. The melodic line soars without feeling overwrought, and the text genuinely articulates what choirs exist to do rather than simply celebrating the act of singing itself. The orchestration gives singers the support they need while never overshadowing them, making this equally effective in churches with robust instrumental programs and smaller ensembles.
What to expect
A burst of collective energy and purpose. The writing feels generous and embracing, inviting singers into a shared mission rather than demanding virtuosity. There's warmth in the orchestral writing and strength in the harmonic language that makes this feel contemporary yet grounded.
Who it's for
Directors seeking an opening or closing anthem that speaks directly to choir culture and resonates with both performers and audiences. This works equally well in concert settings and worship services where you want a moment of genuine affirmation about why your ensemble gathers to sing together.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the phrase peaks with dynamic clarity; let the orchestra anchor the harmonic underpinning while singers project the melodic story
- Balance homophonic and imitative textures by adjusting the relative weight of choir and instruments at key moments
- Allow the theme to breathe between sections rather than pushing relentlessly forward; the passion emerges from conviction, not speed
How to use it
Open a concert with this as a statement of intention, or close one as a affirming bow. It also serves beautifully as the finale for a spring choral festival or as the anchor piece in a program exploring music's role in building community. The piece works year-round and wears well with repeated hearings.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining focused tone production across long, soaring phrases
- Blending voices while maintaining individual line clarity against orchestral accompaniment
- Shaping dynamic contours that reflect textual and emotional content
- Responding to instrumental cues and following a conductor through ensemble textures
