About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger across sacred, secular, and educational genres.

With over 500 compositions published by Alfred, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and other major houses, Moore's work appears regularly in state contests, festivals, and music conventions at regional and national levels. He has received the ASCAP Composers Standard Award seventeen times and was recognized by the American Choral Directors Association as one of 400 composers of significance in American choral music history.

Why we love this

Moore's revoicing here opens this beloved arrangement to SATB choirs without sacrificing the emotional directness that made the TTB version so successful. The piece sits comfortably in mixed voices while retaining its singability and programming appeal, making it an excellent choice for festivals, services, and concert seasons where traditional blessings carry real weight.

What to expect

Warm, grounded, and suffused with gentle reverence. The Irish blessing carries centuries of hope and protection, and Moore's arrangement honors that heritage through straightforward harmony and singable lines that feel natural rather than constructed.

Who it's for

SATB choirs of all levels, from community and church ensembles to high school and college groups seeking accessible yet meaningful repertoire. Conductors who know Moore's TTB version will recognize the same musical integrity applied to mixed voicing, making this an easy addition for choirs transitioning between repertoire or expanding their blessing anthems.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with gentle dynamic swell rather than rigid forte-piano contrasts; the blessing works best when it feels conversational and intimate.
  • Balance the parts so the text remains the primary focus. This is blessing, not display, so clarity of diction matters more than vocal brilliance.
  • Allow sopranos and altos to breathe together on rests; unified breath support across sections strengthens the musical unity even in this accessible arrangement.

How to use it

Program this as an opening or closing number for a concert celebrating world traditions, or as a contemplative moment within a service or festival. The piece works equally well paired with other blessings and prayers or as a standalone spiritual anchor in a mixed program.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in SATB voicing with clear part independence
  • Sustaining legato line through simple but connected phrases
  • Balancing ensemble blend while maintaining text clarity
  • Interpreting a text-driven arrangement that prioritizes meaning over complexity
