About the Arranger: Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen's reach across band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and choral music has established him as one of the most frequently performed composer/arrangers of our time. His work appears consistently in concert halls, broadcasts, and film scores across North America and internationally. As a clinician and commissioned composer, Strommen maintains an active schedule while teaching orchestration and composition as an adjunct faculty member at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
A City College of New York graduate, Strommen has earned the ASCAP Standard Writers Award annually throughout his career, a testament to the breadth and quality of his catalog. His varied output across genres and ensembles demonstrates a deep understanding of what works in performance settings, from school concerts to professional stages.
Why we love this
Strommen understands what makes a patriotic work land with an audience: strong melodic hooks, accessible orchestration, and the lift that comes from combining voices and instruments. This piece carries the weight of occasion without demanding virtuosity, which means your ensemble can focus on the emotional delivery rather than technical survival. The SAB/2-part voicing options give you real flexibility across your choir sections.
What to expect
Confident and celebratory, with the kind of straightforward patriotic warmth that feels genuine rather than oversold. The combination of band and voices creates a full, resonant sound that carries emotional weight, like watching a parade pass by rather than reading about one.
Who it's for
Band directors programming a summer concert or 4th of July event who want a piece that energizes both musicians and audience without requiring advanced technical skills. This works for ensembles with developing choirs and mixed-ability band sections, since Strommen's Grade 3 writing leaves room for musicality over difficulty.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the choral and instrumental forces so neither overwhelms the other; the arrangement works best when both groups feel equally present throughout the piece.
- Establish a strong tempo foundation early. A conductor who commits to a steady pulse makes it easier for students to lock into the patriotic character without rushing or dragging.
- Highlight the contrasting textures between choral passages and band-alone moments. These shifts create momentum and keep the audience engaged.
- Work the choir's diction with the same precision you would a full musical theater production. Patriotic texts deserve clarity and conviction.
How to use it
Position this as a closer or major program centerpiece where you want the audience to leave feeling uplifted. The piece also works well as a concert opener if you want to establish energy and goodwill from the start, or as a finale that brings your full musical forces together for maximum impact.
