About the Composer: Michael Oare

Michael Oare combines three decades of classroom experience with a prolific compositional output that speaks directly to the needs of young musicians. His tenure as Director of Bands at Great Bridge Middle School shaped not only his approach to writing accessible literature but also his deep understanding of what works when students are still building fundamental musicianship. Recognition as a two-time recipient of the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence and his inclusion in GIA Publications' "Teaching Music Through Performance" series reflect his standing as a composer who listens to educators and writes music that serves both artistic and pedagogical goals.
Since 2015, Oare has extended his influence beyond the middle school setting as conductor of the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band. His active work as adjudicator, performer with the Virginia Wind Symphony, and member of both ASCAP and Phi Beta Mu keeps him connected to the broader musical community even as he continues to write for younger ensembles.
Why we love this
Grade 2 works that sustain genuine musical energy from start to finish are uncommon, but Oare delivers exactly that here. The structural intelligence matters as much as the fun: a syncopated opening hooks listeners immediately, the 3/4 middle section feels earned rather than arbitrary, and the return to driving rhythms gives closure rather than fatigue. Your students will feel the narrative arc without needing to be told they're on a ski slope.
What to expect
Speed and control in conversation with each other. The syncopated opening launches like a skier dropping into the fall line, all forward momentum and calculated precision. When the piece shifts to the lyric 3/4 section, it's not a breath; it's a tighter line through moguls, the same velocity filtered through a different musical texture. The closing mirrors the opening, sending listeners and players home still riding the rush.
Who it's for
Grade 2 bands ready to tackle something with real musical substance and programming appeal. This works equally well for ensembles that thrive on energy and for those building confidence through successful repertoire with genuine artistic payoff.
How to get the most out of it
- Lock the syncopation in the opening section before anything else. Have percussion and low brass nail this rhythmic foundation first, then layer melody parts once that pulse is unshakeable.
- The 3/4 middle section will tempt conductors to slow down. Resist that instinct. Oare marks it at the same fast tempo, so the shift is stylistic rather than metric. Keep the forward momentum alive.
- Balance the "lyric melody" line in the middle against the harmonic support so it floats without disappearing. This section is where the piece reveals warmth beneath the adrenaline.
- Articulation consistency in the syncopated passages shapes how crisp the opening and closing feel. Spend a rehearsal on uniform tonguing across the ensemble.
How to use it
Place this early enough in a concert that your audience arrives energized and engaged. It pairs well with ballads or softer fare that follows it, since the emotional weight sits firmly in the driving rhythmic content rather than in subtlety. The 2:40 duration fits neatly into festival rotations or evening concert segments where pacing matters.
Skills your students will build
- Executing syncopated rhythms with precision and consistency
- Reading and performing in mixed meters (fast 4/4 and 3/4)
- Balancing melodic prominence against harmonic accompaniment
- Maintaining steady tempo through stylistic shifts
- Unified articulation across the ensemble
