About the Arranger: Joel Raney

Joel Raney's musical foundation was laid at a rural Baptist church in Alabama, where gospel music first shaped his compositional voice. That early influence permeates everything he writes. He earned his bachelor's degree in choral conducting from the University of North Alabama before pursuing advanced keyboard studies at Juilliard, where he earned a master's in piano performance.
Since 1999, Raney has become a prolific force in church music, with over 300 published works spanning choral anthems, musicals, cantatas, handbell pieces, and instrumental compositions. As Editor at Hope Publishing, he continues to shape the landscape of sacred music while maintaining an active career as a clinician, performer, and composer. His versatility extends beyond the church: he has conducted Broadway national tours, directed theater productions in major cities, and composed thousands of television and radio commercial scores since 1988.
Why we love this
Raney's gospel roots shine through in the harmonic language and rhythmic vitality of this arrangement. The instrumental parts are written with accessibility in mind, making it feasible for choirs at various instrumentational levels without sacrificing musical substance or the joy that radiates from the text.
What to expect
The piece radiates celebratory confidence. Raney's arrangement captures the theological certainty of its text while maintaining a musical approachability that invites singers and instrumentalists to participate fully without excessive technical demands.
Who it's for
This arrangement works for church choirs of intermediate ability who want to add instrumental depth without requiring advanced players. It's equally suited to school choral programs seeking sacred music with contemporary energy and accessibility.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the choir's brightness with the instrumental colors; these parts are meant to enhance, not overpower, the singers' message
- Let the gospel inflection inform your tempo choices and rhythmic flexibility, even if the notation appears straightforward
- Rehearse choir and instruments separately first to establish independent security before blending them together
How to use it
Consider this for Easter services, spring concerts, or any program celebrating themes of resurrection and hope. It pairs well alongside both traditional and contemporary sacred repertoire, serving as a strong anchor piece that audiences immediately connect with.
Skills your students will build
- Balancing vocal and instrumental textures
- Singing with stylistic awareness of gospel idioms
- Reading instrumental parts in various clefs and transpositions
- Coordinating ensemble attacks and cutoffs across mixed voices and instruments
