About the Arranger: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan holds degrees in music education from Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma. Over her 28 year tenure teaching choral music in Norman Public Schools, she built four consistently superior-rated choirs and earned Teacher of the Year recognition, then received the Director of Distinction Award from the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association in 2004.
Now a full-time composer and arranger with over 425 published choral octavos and two million copies in circulation, Drennan remains an active clinician and workshop presenter across 19 states and Canada. She has adjudicated choral contests throughout the South and Southwest, directed at numerous church composer weekends, and served as music and worship arts director at First Baptist Church in Norman for a decade. Her work continues to reach performers in school and church settings nationwide.
Why we love this
Drennan's setting respects the dignity of this familiar hymn while giving it freshness through organ and piano support that allows for both choir independence and congregational singing. The arrangement is substantial enough to make a real statement at a service or concert yet written within the technical reach of most volunteer and school choirs, which is no small feat.
What to expect
Noble, assured, and grounded in reverence. This arrangement carries the weight of a hymn sung across generations while the keyboard writing adds harmonic color and structural support that makes the piece feel complete and composed rather than simply adapted.
Who it's for
Church choirs of intermediate to advanced ability, school choirs seeking strong sacred repertoire, and any ensemble wanting a regal standard that works across both liturgical and concert settings. The flexible scoring makes it accessible whether your choir sings with or without full congregation participation.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the choir against the keyboard accompaniment; the organ and piano should support without overwhelming, especially if congregational participation is included.
- Attend to the text as a spiritual proclamation rather than mere notes on the page. Let the majesty in the music serve the meaning of the words.
- If incorporating congregational singing, prepare the choir to sustain the parts that may sustain without them, keeping the piece cohesive across the transitions.
How to use it
Open a sacred concert or service with this as a processional or opening statement, letting the regal character set the tone for what follows. It also anchors an evening of hymn arrangements or sits comfortably as a centerpiece in a mixed choral program where you need a moment of spiritual weight.
Skills your students will build
- Singing sustained hymnic lines with proper phrasing and breath control
- Blending with keyboard accompaniment while maintaining ensemble balance
- Interpreting text with spiritual intent rather than mechanical delivery
- Sight-reading within traditional hymn harmonies
