About the Author: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger whose works span sacred, secular, educational, and popular choral repertoire across multiple publishers including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Heritage Music Press.

With over 500 compositions in print, Moore's music regularly appears at state contests, festivals, and national conventions. He has received the ASCAP Composers Standard Award seventeen times and was recently recognized by the American Choral Directors Association as one of 400 elite composers of significance in American choral music history. Beyond his musical work, Moore is also known for his competitive involvement in midget car racing.

Why we love this

Most choral students learn the fundamentals of their art through singing and rehearsal, but Moore's crossword puzzles offer a complementary way to deepen understanding of choir culture, technique, and tradition. The reproducible format means you can assign them without licensing concerns, making them practical for ensemble warm-ups, substitute lesson days, or independent study. Twenty carefully scaffolded puzzles that balance content knowledge with engagement.

What to expect

Working through these puzzles feels like a guided discovery of choral life. Rather than passively absorbing facts about diction, posture, and conducting, students actively recall and connect terms, making the knowledge stick in a way that lecture alone cannot.

Who it's for

General music teachers, choir directors, and homeschool educators looking for classroom-ready activities that reinforce choral vocabulary and concepts. Students at the middle school through high school levels benefit most from the puzzle format and vocabulary demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Scatter puzzles throughout the fall and spring seasons rather than clustering them in one unit; this keeps choir fundamentals fresh without overwhelming rehearsal time
  • Use the word lists as a pre-puzzle vocabulary warm-up during sectional rehearsals to build confidence before students tackle the crosswords independently
  • Have students work puzzles in pairs during the first five minutes of rehearsal to activate focus on that day's topic before moving into singing

How to use it

Distribute these puzzles at the start of your choral unit or season to establish shared vocabulary and conceptual foundation. They also work well as independent work during sectional rehearsals or as take-home assignments to extend learning beyond rehearsal time. The included word lists and solutions make them self-sufficient resources that require minimal preparation.

Skills your students will build

  • Choral terminology (diction, posture, blend, intonation)
  • Knowledge of conducting techniques and rehearsal protocols
  • Understanding of concert etiquette and performance expectations
  • Vocabulary recognition and retention through active puzzle-solving
