More about this title

About the Author: E. L. Lancaster

E. L. Lancaster shaped piano pedagogy in America for decades. As Executive Editor of Piano for Alfred Music and a professor at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, he built the institution's master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy from the ground up, mentoring more than 50 doctoral candidates. He earned degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

Beyond academia, Lancaster held leadership roles across the piano teaching profession, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Conference Chair for MTNA. His impact on music education extended into the studio; he and his wife operated a thriving independent piano program in Norman while also directing the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, where he combined group and private instruction for pre-college students. His contributions earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching, the David Ross Boyd Professorship, and recognition as a Distinguished Alumnus of Murray State University.

Why we love this

This General MIDI disk removes the barrier between printed page and sound. Students can hear themselves playing the Alfred's Piano 101 repertoire, making the leap from notation to actual music immediate and motivating. For group piano settings and self-directed learning, having reliable accompaniments and performance models embedded in the method itself accelerates progress and keeps engagement high.

What to expect

Sound comes alive. The General MIDI format delivers clean, reliable playback that lets the music shine without demanding fancy hardware. It's straightforward and functional, designed to support learning rather than showcase production value.

Who it's for

This disk supports piano students working through Alfred's Piano 101: The Short Course. It's especially valuable in group piano classes where providing live accompaniment isn't always feasible, and for individual students who benefit from hearing professional performances alongside their own work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the MIDI files to demonstrate proper tempo and phrasing before students attempt pieces solo
  • Layer the disk into practice assignments so students can play along with accompaniments at home
  • Adjust MIDI tempo settings to match your teaching pace; not all students need to move at the same speed

How to use it

Integrate this into your digital piano lab or bring it into lessons on a tablet or computer. Use it as a practice tool students access between lessons, or play the accompaniment tracks during group classes to keep everyone rhythmically aligned.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening to and matching steady tempo
  • Coordinating melody with accompaniment
  • Building confidence through performance modeling
  • Developing independence from teacher accompaniment
