About the Composer: E. L. Lancaster

E. L. Lancaster brings decades of piano pedagogy expertise to Alfred's Piano 101. He served as Executive Editor of Piano for Alfred Music and held the position of Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma for nearly two decades, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy and mentored over 50 doctoral candidates in the field. His teaching career also included directing a large independent piano studio alongside his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, and leading the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program that blended group and private instruction for pre-college students.

Lancaster's contributions to music education have earned him recognition across the profession. He received multiple teaching awards from the University of Oklahoma, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching and a David Ross Boyd Professorship, and has served in leadership roles with MTNA and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. He currently teaches as adjunct piano faculty at California State University, Northridge, and holds degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
