More about this title

About the Author: Morton Manus

Morton Manus

Morton Manus shaped modern music education as president of Alfred Music Publishing from 1952 to 2016. He inherited a popular sheet music publisher founded by his father Sam in the 1920s and transformed it into a comprehensive music education company by developing instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder in the 1950s. A trained clarinetist and pianist himself, Manus recognized that quality teaching materials were essential to music education and built Alfred Music into an industry leader.

Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music expanded dramatically across four decades, eventually outgrowing its New York headquarters and relocating to Los Angeles in 1975. His sons Ron and Steve joined the company in the late 1980s and early 1990s, continuing his vision of developing world-class instructional methods and performance music while establishing international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK.

Why we love this

This assignment book solves a practical teaching problem that every piano teacher faces: documenting what students practiced, what they struggled with, and what comes next. The structured format keeps the three-way conversation between teacher, student, and parent clear and consistent without requiring teachers to reinvent their own system each week.

Who it's for

Piano teachers who work with beginning and early intermediate students need a reliable way to assign work, track progress, and communicate expectations to students and families. Parents appreciate having a clear record of what their child is learning and where practice should focus between lessons.

How to use it

Use this assignment book as your primary communication tool throughout the year. Each lesson, fill in specific assignments, notes about technique or repertoire, and any concerns you want parents to understand, creating a documented trail of each student's growth and learning objectives.

Skills your students will build

  • understanding written assignment expectations
  • practicing with accountability and structure
  • reading teacher feedback and applying corrections at home
  • developing a routine connection between lesson and practice
