More about this title

About the Author: Ron Manus

Ron Manus

Ron Manus joined Alfred Music in 1988 and has shaped the company's evolution as Chief Business Development Officer. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he spearheaded the creation and expansion of Alfred's New Media division, pioneering the integration of software, enhanced CDs, videos, DVDs, and streaming into music instruction at a time when most publishers were still print-focused. His work fundamentally changed how musicians learn.

Beyond digital innovation, Manus played a critical role in restructuring Alfred into a team-based organization during the 1990s, enabling faster response to market shifts. In 2005, he orchestrated the acquisition of Warner Brothers Publications, bringing into Alfred's catalog the music of George and Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Green Day, and many others. As a third-generation member of the Manus family leading the company, he continues to expand Alfred's reach across contemporary music mediums.

Why we love this

The animated teaching characters (a classical dog, jazz cat, and blues alligator) create genuine personality on the page without sacrificing pedagogical clarity. The included TNT 2 software and Jared Meeker's video give students multiple entry points to understand new material, and the ability to slow down practice tracks transforms a young learner's confidence in tackling unfamiliar rhythms and fingerings. For parents guiding their children, the plain-language explanations and online support mean they don't need prior music knowledge to be helpful.

What to expect

Rock and blues energy meet playful instruction. The teaching characters inject humor and approachability into every page, while the songs and examples ground learning in styles kids actually want to play. This feels like learning from a friendly mentor rather than trudging through dry exercises.

Who it's for

This course is designed for young students picking up electric guitar for the first time, typically elementary through early middle school ages. Parents without musical training can confidently guide their child through the material thanks to clear explanations and the supplementary video instruction by Jared Meeker.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean on the online video demonstrations before moving to the next lesson. Hearing and watching an expert performer execute each concept creates a mental model that the book alone cannot provide.
  • Use Alfred's TNT 2 software to isolate challenging sections. Reducing tempo while maintaining pitch accuracy lets students internalize difficult rhythms without the frustration of struggling at full speed.
  • Have your student play along with the audio tracks once they've learned the basics. Matching a backing track builds timing and musicality in a way silent practice does not.

How to use it

This works as a primary method for private studio instruction or as an entry point for classroom guitar programs where you want students making music from day one. The online components make it ideal for hybrid or remote lessons, and the engaging character-driven approach sustains motivation across the 48-page arc.

Skills your students will build

  • Basic open chords (E, A, D, G, C) and chord changes
  • Fundamental strumming patterns and rhythm notation
  • Reading tablature and standard notation on the treble clef
  • Blues and rock styles through repertoire
  • Hand position and fretting technique
  • Listening skills and rhythmic accuracy with backing tracks
