More about this title

About the Author: Ron Manus

Ron Manus

Ron Manus represents the third generation of his family's involvement with Alfred Music, joining the company in 1988 and rising to Chief Business Development Officer. His vision transformed Alfred from a traditional publishing house into a multimedia education company, overseeing the creation of the New Media division in the late 1980s and shepherding the company's expansion into software, enhanced CDs, videos, DVDs, and streaming platforms.

Beyond digital innovation, Manus guided Alfred through a major structural reorganization in the 1990s that enabled faster response to market shifts, and in 2005 he orchestrated the acquisition of Warner Brothers Publications, bringing iconic catalogs from the Gershwins, Duke Ellington, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and dozens of other artists into Alfred's portfolio.

Why we love this

This method sequences learning in a logical, playable order that keeps beginners engaged from day one. The integration of DVD video, MP3 audio, and online streaming means students can learn at their own pace without depending solely on your availability, while the accompanying book remains the anchor for structured practice and reference.

What to expect

Learning feels accessible and immediate. The pacing allows early wins, with recognizable songs and simple chords building confidence quickly. The blend of notation and TAB means students aren't locked into a single reading system and can progress at their own comfort level.

Who it's for

This method is designed for absolute beginners of all ages picking up the ukulele for the first time. It works equally well in group classroom settings, small ensemble instruction, and private studio practice, making it adaptable across teaching contexts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Play along with the audio tracks to internalize timing and develop a feel for the songs early on. Hearing the complete arrangement helps students connect their individual part to the bigger musical picture.
  • Have students watch the video demonstrations for hand position before attempting new techniques. Visual models reduce confusion about left-hand finger placement and right-hand strumming mechanics.
  • Encourage students to sing the melodies while playing to reinforce pitch awareness and musicality, not just finger mechanics.

How to use it

Use this as your core curriculum for a beginner ukulele elective or as an add-on to an existing strings program. The 64-page scope fits comfortably into a semester or year of instruction, with the multimedia components allowing students to continue learning between lessons or during independent practice time.

Skills your students will build

  • proper ukulele hold and posture
  • tuning and maintenance of the instrument
  • right-hand strumming patterns and rhythm
  • left-hand finger placement and chord shapes
  • reading standard music notation and TAB together
  • recognizing and playing basic major and minor chords
  • sight-reading simple melodies and folk songs
