About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as a globally recognized musician, scholar, and educator whose creative output spans nearly 800 published compositions. His works encompass piano methods, guitar instruction books, accordion techniques, Hammond Chord Organ materials, solo pieces, and choral arrangements that have been published in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's distinguished career began with early promise as a child prodigy who performed piano on radio broadcasts at age thirteen. He studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper piano technique unlocked his natural gift for improvisation. His collegiate training at Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi included radio performances and ensemble work. Following his bachelor's degree from Millsaps, Palmer earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany and later pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Houston.
At the University of Houston, Palmer established the first successful college accordion program, teaching there for eighteen years. His scholarly pursuits ultimately focused on Classical and Baroque music, earning him international recognition as an expert in Baroque ornamentation. This expertise informed the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 for his contributions to musicological research. He also served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who founded it in 1922 as Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley before merging with Alfred & Company in 1930. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Morty brought a fresh vision to the family business after earning his business degree from City College of New York.
During his tenure, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education leader. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that became industry standards. The company's expansion was remarkable; it grew so substantially that headquarters relocated from New York to Los Angeles in 1975, with a separate distribution center established upstairs New York. By 2005, Alfred Music had acquired Warner Bros. Publications and the EMI Catalogue Partnership, solidifying its position as a major force in music publishing.
Manus's sons continued the family legacy, with Ron joining in 1988 and Steve in 1992. Together they broadened Alfred Music's reach by establishing international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom while maintaining focus on developing world-class instructional methods and performance materials.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most widely used piano methods. She developed this foundational resource alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. A dedicated educator, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin.
Her academic credentials include degrees from Northwestern University: a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance. She also holds an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Her musical training drew from distinguished mentors including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
