About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar who left an indelible mark on music instruction. As a child prodigy, he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age thirteen and built his early musical foundation on piano and accordion study, particularly under the mentorship of Mae Vardeman. Throughout his career, he brought these instruments and his pedagogical vision to audiences and students across multiple continents.
Palmer's compositional and educational output was extraordinary, encompassing 789 published works that span accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction, Hammond Chord Organ technique, solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of his publications were translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence worldwide. His scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became recognized internationally and formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series.
Beyond composition and writing, Palmer maintained an active presence in musical institutions and communities. He taught at the University of Houston for eighteen years, establishing the first successful college accordion courses. His research interests eventually centered on Classical and Baroque music pedagogical approaches, work that earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and for many years led the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who founded it in 1922 as Manus Music in New York City's Tin Pan Alley and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. After earning a business degree from City College of New York, Morty joined the family enterprise in the late 1940s, where he met his wife Iris.
During his tenure, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, establishing Alfred as a leader in music education materials. Under his leadership, the company expanded dramatically, necessitating a move of the main office to Los Angeles in 1975 and the distribution center to upstate New York.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is widely recognized as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the globally celebrated piano method she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her musical training included study with distinguished pedagogues and composers including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice across New York City, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and earned recognition in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women. Beyond her teaching responsibilities, she collaborated with Dr. Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano.
