About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who demonstrated exceptional talent from childhood. A radio performer at just 13 years old, he built his musical foundation through piano study with Mae Vardeman and accordion training. His college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College saw him continue performing on radio and in campus ensembles before pursuing advanced studies at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a prestigious scholarship.
Palmer's prolific career produced 789 published compositions spanning accordion methods, piano methods, organ instruction books, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral works, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. At the University of Houston, he pioneered the first successful college-level accordion courses during his 18 years on the faculty. His extensive research in Baroque music ornamentation earned him international recognition and became the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series of publications.
Beyond his compositional and teaching work, Palmer served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. His scholarly contributions were honored with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He maintained active membership in the American Federation of Musicians Local 65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. His father, Sam Manus, established the company's roots in 1922 as Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley, initially publishing popular sheet music. In 1930, Sam acquired Alfred & Company and merged the operations under the Alfred Music name, which endures today. Morton joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning his business degree from City College of New York and eventually took the helm when his father retired.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a pianist and pedagogue best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. This world-renowned method has become a cornerstone of piano instruction. She served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, bringing decades of experience to her teaching.
Her education reflects study with some of the twentieth century's most distinguished musicians. She earned degrees from Northwestern University in piano performance and music education, including a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance. Additional training came from celebrated teachers including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston. Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi granted her an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in recognition of her contributions.

She gave recitals across the United States and served as a clinician at conventions nationwide.
