About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who produced 789 published compositions across multiple genres and instruments. His prolific output includes accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction books, Hammond Chord Organ materials, numerous solo pieces, and choral works, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he also served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's distinguished career began early. As a child prodigy, he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13, having studied with Mae Vardeman, who developed his improvisational abilities through rigorous technique training. He continued performing accordion and piano throughout his college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps before pursuing advanced study at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a prestigious two-year scholarship. Following post-graduate work at the University of Houston, he joined the faculty there and pioneered the first successful college accordion courses, teaching for 18 years.
Palmer became a preeminent authority on Baroque music ornamentation through meticulous scholarly research in Classical and Baroque periods. His expertise formed the foundation of the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. The academic community recognized his contributions with a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983). He served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus led Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. as president from 1952 to 2016. The company traces its roots to 1922, when his father Sam Manus founded Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley as a popular sheet music publisher. In 1930, Sam merged his company with Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase, creating what became Alfred Music. Morty joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York and eventually succeeded his father as president.
Under Morty's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a sheet music publisher into a music education powerhouse. A clarinetist and pianist himself, he recognized the market demand for quality instructional materials and oversaw the creation of groundbreaking educational series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. The company's expansion during the 1950s and beyond positioned Alfred as a leader in music education, leading to significant growth that eventually necessitated relocating the main office to Los Angeles in 1975 while moving the distribution center to upstate New York.
Morty's sons Ron and Steve joined the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively, continuing the family legacy. Together they expanded Alfred Music's global reach by establishing international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK while maintaining focus on developing world-class instructional and performance materials. Her educational credentials include three degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) as well as an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She studied under distinguished musicians including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston.
