About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, scholar, and educator whose contributions span multiple instruments and genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his musical foundation through early studies in piano and accordion under teacher Mae Vardeman, whose guidance in improvisation and technique proved formative for his entire career.
Over his lifetime, Dr. Palmer created 789 published works encompassing accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications reached global audiences through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. As a faculty member at the University of Houston for eighteen years, he pioneered the first successful college accordion courses. His scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became widely recognized and formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series.
Dr. Palmer's academic credentials included a Bachelor's degree from Millsaps College, advanced study at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, and post-graduate work at the University of Houston. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological research. Beyond teaching, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and held membership in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for more than six decades, from 1952 to 2016. The company itself traces its roots to 1922, when his father Sam Manus, a violinist and silent film music importer, established Manus Music in New York City's Tin Pan Alley. In 1930, Sam merged his operation with Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase, creating what became Alfred Music. Morty joined the firm in the late 1940s following his business degree from City College of New York and eventually took over leadership as his father retired.
Under Morty's direction, Alfred Music transformed from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series beginning with accordion methods, then expanding to guitar, piano, and recorder books. This strategic shift positioned Alfred Music as a leader in music education throughout the 1950s and beyond. Morty himself was an accomplished clarinetist and pianist who understood the market he was developing for.
The company's expansion continued dramatically over subsequent decades. In 1975, the headquarters relocated to Los Angeles with a distribution center in upstate New York to accommodate growth. Morty's sons Ron and Steve joined the enterprise in 1988 and 1992 respectively, helping establish international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. A major milestone came in 2005 when Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications and secured rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a pianist and educator best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned three degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) and studied with renowned pedagogues including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
As Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Lethco maintained an active career as both a performer and teacher. She gave recitals throughout the United States and conducted workshops on college and university campuses. Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi honored her with a Doctor of Humanities degree. She also co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
