About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his artistic foundation studying piano with Mae Vardeman and accordion, both of which became central to his life's work. His early performances on radio and in various ensembles during his college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College demonstrated his versatility across different musical settings.
Palmer's published output includes 789 works encompassing accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of these publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence across continents. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Millsaps College, pursued advanced study at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany on a two-year scholarship, and completed post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he joined the faculty and taught the first successful college accordion courses for eighteen years.
In his later career, Palmer became recognized worldwide as a leading authority on Baroque music ornamentation through meticulous scholarly research. His expertise formed the foundation for the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological contributions. Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. For many years, he also directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father, Sam Manus, who founded the original music publishing business in New York City during the 1920s. A trained clarinetist and pianist with a business degree from City College of New York, Morty transformed Alfred Music from a traditional sheet music publisher into a comprehensive educational resource.
During the 1950s, Manus spearheaded a strategic reinvention of the company by developing instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. These educational products reflected his commitment to quality music learning and positioned Alfred Music as an industry leader in music education materials. Over the following decades, the company expanded significantly, relocating its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and establishing international offices throughout Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
