About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, scholar, and educator whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation through study with Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in technique and improvisation shaped his artistic development. His early years included performances on accordion and piano across radio shows and campus ensembles during his time at Whitworth College and Millsaps College.
Palmer's published output reached 789 works, encompassing accordion and piano methods, a Hammond Chord Organ method, guitar instruction materials, numerous solo compositions, and choral pieces. Many of these publications were translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. At the University of Houston, where he served on the music faculty for 18 years, he established and taught the institution's first successful college-level accordion courses.
His later scholarly pursuits centered on Classical and Baroque music, earning him international recognition as an expert in Baroque ornamentation. This expertise directly influenced the Alfred Masterworks series, a highly regarded publication line. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological research. Beyond his academic work, he directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and served as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years. He held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York. The company itself traces its roots to 1922, when his father Sam founded Manus Music in New York City's Tin Pan Alley; Sam later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930 to create what became Alfred Music.
During Manus's tenure, he fundamentally transformed Alfred Music from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education enterprise. His vision drove the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. By the 1970s, the company's growth necessitated relocating its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975, while establishing a separate distribution center in upstate New York. Under his leadership and that of his sons Ron and Steve, who joined in 1988 and 1992 respectively, Alfred Music expanded globally with offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the internationally acclaimed method developed alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. A pianist and pedagogy expert, she served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained private teaching studios in New York City, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston throughout her career.
Her education reflects study with some of the era's finest musicians: James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston. She earned three degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
