About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific output shaped music education across multiple instruments. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation through early studies with Mae Vardeman, who instilled in him both technical excellence and improvisational skill. His instrumental training encompassed piano and accordion, disciplines that would define his entire career.
Palmer's compositional legacy includes 789 published works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar pedagogy, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of these works have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence globally. His scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation earned him international recognition and provided the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological contributions.
Beyond composition and research, Palmer maintained an active presence in music education and institutional leadership. He taught at the University of Houston for 18 years, pioneering the first successful college accordion curriculum. His scholarly work as a director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute complemented his role as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston. He held membership in the American Federation of Musicians (Local #65), the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited a company founded by his father, Sam Manus, in 1922 as a Tin Pan Alley sheet music publisher that later merged with Alfred & Company in 1930. Armed with a business degree from City College of New York and skills in clarinet and piano, Morty transformed Alfred Music from a popular music publisher into an educational powerhouse.
During his tenure, Manus spearheaded the development of instructional series that became industry standards, beginning with accordion methods in the 1950s and expanding to guitar, piano, and recorder instruction books. Under his leadership, Alfred Music grew substantially and relocated its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York. The company also pursued strategic international expansion, opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK.
Manus's sons Ron and Steve joined the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively, continuing the family legacy. Together, they propelled Alfred Music to become the world's leading publisher of instructional and performance music. A major milestone came in 2005 when Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. A Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, she built her expertise through studies with renowned pedagogues including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance, all from Northwestern University. She also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her groundbreaking work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Dr. Lethco collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano.
