About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar who composed nearly 800 published works across multiple instruments and genres. His compositions span accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction materials, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions, many of which have been published in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish editions. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical foundation began early, as he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13 and studied both piano and accordion under Mae Vardeman, a teacher who cultivated his improvisational skills through rigorous classical technique. His college years at Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi included ongoing radio performances and ensemble work. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he earned a prestigious two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany. He later completed post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he joined the faculty and taught the institution's first successful college-level accordion courses for 18 years.
Palmer gained worldwide recognition as a leading authority on Baroque music ornamentation and classical music scholarship. His research in these areas became the foundation for the critically acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. The academic community honored his contributions with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He also served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. His father, Sam Manus, had founded the company's predecessor, Manus Music, in New York City in 1922 as a popular sheet music publisher. In 1930, Sam merged his company with Alfred & Company to create Alfred Music, which remains the company's name today. Morty joined the firm in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York and later met his wife, Iris, when she came to work at the company.
Under Morty's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. Drawing on his own experience as a clarinetist and pianist, he spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder during the 1950s. This expansion positioned Alfred Music as a leader in music education materials. As the company's catalog and operations grew substantially, Manus oversaw a major relocation in 1975, moving the main office to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York.
Morty's sons, Ron and Steve, continued the family legacy by joining Alfred Music in 1988 and 1992 respectively. Together, they accelerated the company's international expansion, opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, the company acquired Warner Bros.
