Alfred's Basic Prep Course, Levels A through F, was written to answer a demand for a course of piano study designed specifically for students who are five years old and up. This course offers a careful introduction of fundamentals, music that fits comfortably under the young student's normal hand span, plus constant reinforcement--all leading to results beyond those generated by other piano methods. After Lesson Book D, the student may progress to Prep Course, Lesson Book E or choose to go directly into the faster paced Level 2 of Alfred's Basic Piano Library. The complete Prep Course consists of six books (Levels A through F).

About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar who shaped music instruction across multiple instruments. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation under the tutelage of Mae Vardeman, whose emphasis on proper technique and improvisation fundamentally influenced his career trajectory. His early years combined performance work with academic study at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, followed by advanced training at the prestigious Conservatory of Leipzig on a two-year scholarship.
Throughout his prolific career, Palmer authored 789 published compositions and instructional works spanning accordion, piano, guitar, Hammond Chord Organ, and choral music. Many of these pieces have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his pedagogical reach globally. His scholarly research into Baroque music ornamentation earned him international recognition and served as the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received both a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983) in recognition of his musicological contributions.
Beyond composition and publication, Palmer directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas for many years and pioneered accordion instruction as a college discipline, teaching the first successful accordion courses at the University of Houston for 18 years. He held membership in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, while also serving as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. throughout its most transformative period, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father, Sam Manus, who founded it in 1922 as Manus Music and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. A clarinetist and pianist with a business degree from City College of New York, Morton joined the family business in the late 1940s.
During his tenure, Morton fundamentally reimagined Alfred Music's direction in the 1950s. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, transforming the company from a sheet music publisher into a leading force in music education. This strategic shift proved enormously successful, and by the mid-1970s, the company's growth necessitated a major relocation; the headquarters moved to Los Angeles in 1975 while the distribution center was established in upstate New York.
Morton's sons, Ron and Steve, joined the company in 1988 and 1992 respectively, continuing his vision for expansion and innovation. Under their collective leadership, Alfred Music developed world-class instructional methods and performance music while establishing an international presence through offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a pianist and pedagogue best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most recognized piano methods, alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and built her musical foundation through studies with renowned teachers including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the same institution. She also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her pedagogical contributions, Dr. Lethco performed recitals across the United States and co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
