About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who created 789 published compositions across multiple genres and instruments. His prolific output included accordion and piano methods, works for Hammond Chord Organ, guitar instruction materials, numerous solo pieces, and choral arrangements. Many of his compositions were translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence across the globe.
Palmer's musical foundation began early; he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13 and trained under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique helped him develop his improvisational skills. His formal education included studies at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, followed by a two-year scholarship at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany. At the University of Houston, where he later joined the faculty, Palmer taught pioneering college-level accordion courses for 18 years and conducted extensive post-graduate studies.
Throughout his career, Palmer earned recognition as a leading authority on Baroque music ornamentation, scholarship that became the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP, and directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited a company with roots stretching back to 1922, when his father Sam founded Manus Music in New York City's Tin Pan Alley. Sam later merged his business with Alfred & Company in 1930, creating Alfred Music. After earning a business degree from City College of New York, Morty joined the company in the late 1940s and eventually took over leadership from his father.
Under Morty's direction, Alfred Music transformed from a sheet music publisher into an educational powerhouse. In the 1950s, he spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, capitalizing on growing demand for quality music education materials. His vision drove the company's expansion across two decades, ultimately outgrowing its New York base. The main office relocated to Los Angeles in 1975, with a distribution center established in upstate New York.
Morty's sons Ron and Steve eventually joined the family business, carrying forward the company's mission. Ron came aboard in 1988 and Steve in 1992. Together they expanded Alfred Music's global footprint by opening international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, the company made a significant acquisition of Warner Bros. Publications, gaining rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and strengthening its relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a pianist and pedagogy specialist who co-created Alfred's Basic Piano Library with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. This world-renowned method has become a foundational resource in piano education. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Bachelor of Music Education from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution.
Her distinguished career includes serving as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Lethco also received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her collaborative work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
