About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who created 789 published compositions spanning multiple instruments and genres. His works include methods for piano, accordion, guitar, and Hammond Chord Organ, as well as numerous solo pieces and choral compositions. Many of these publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence across the globe.
Palmer's distinguished career began remarkably early. He performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13 and studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique fueled his gift for improvisation. His higher education took him through Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he continued performing on radio and in various ensembles. After earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he received a prestigious two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany. Palmer later completed postgraduate studies at the University of Houston and joined that institution's music faculty, where he taught groundbreaking accordion courses for 18 years.
In his later career, Palmer became a preeminent authority on Baroque music ornamentation and earned recognition for his meticulous scholarship in Classical and Baroque periods. His research substantially influenced the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. The University of Houston and other institutions honored his musicological contributions with a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983). Palmer also served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, maintained membership in the American Federation of Musicians and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and directed the choir at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. throughout more than six decades, from 1952 to 2016. A clarinetist and pianist, he inherited the company founded by his father Sam in the 1920s. Armed with a business degree from City College of New York, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a traditional sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company.
During his tenure, Manus spearheaded the development of groundbreaking instructional series beginning with accordion methods, followed by instructional books for guitar, piano, and recorder. His leadership drove substantial growth that eventually required the company to relocate its headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York. In 2005, under Manus's guidance, Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications and secured rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership, forging a long-term relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.
