About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific output shaped music education across multiple disciplines. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation under the tutelage of Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique enabled him to master improvisation. His formative years included studies at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he regularly performed accordion and piano on local broadcasts and with campus ensembles.
Palmer's scholarly contributions earned him worldwide recognition, particularly for his expertise in Baroque music ornamentation. His published portfolio encompasses 789 works spanning accordion and piano methods, a Hammond Chord Organ method, guitar instruction, solo compositions, and choral pieces, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His research culminated in the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series, which brought his specialized knowledge to educators and musicians everywhere.
Beyond composition and writing, Palmer maintained an active presence in music academia and professional organizations. He taught the first successful college accordion courses at the University of Houston for 18 years and served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston. His scholarly achievements were formally recognized with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. Palmer also held positions with the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who had founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. A trained clarinetist and pianist with a business degree from City College of New York, Morty transformed the family enterprise from a popular sheet music publisher into something far more ambitious.

He championed the development of instructional materials including accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder methods, positioning the company as a pioneer in music education. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a renowned piano pedagogue and co-developer of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most influential piano instructional methods, created alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her Bachelor of Music degrees in both Piano Performance and Music Education from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her studies also included work with prestigious musicians such as James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
As Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Lethco established herself as a leading figure in piano education. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, in recognition of her contributions to the field. Her publications include Creating Music at the Piano, co-authored with Dr. Willard Palmer.
