About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, completed a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy at Northwestern University, and received her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
A prolific author and clinician, Dr. Kowalchyk has co-written over 300 educational piano publications with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, including the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association convention, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Based in the Los Angeles area, she currently serves as a clinician for Alfred Music while maintaining her teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches as an adjunct piano faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
During his tenure at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music and pioneered the establishment of master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral candidates in this specialized field and directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which blended group and private instruction for pre-college students. Alongside his university work, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996.
Recognition of his excellence came through numerous prestigious awards, including the University of Oklahoma's Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). He received the David Ross Boyd Professorship in 1991, an honor bestowed upon faculty members who demonstrate exceptional teaching and student mentorship. Dr. Lancaster has held significant leadership roles within the music education community, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Conference Chair for MTNA, as well as Chair of the Administration/Pedagogy Liaison Committee for the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian, and Murray State University presented him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
