About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Her professional accomplishments include extensive experience as both a clinician and adjudicator for major music organizations. She has presented at conventions for the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and specialized forums such as the National Piano Teachers Institute, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has authored over 300 educational piano publications, among them the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
Before joining California State University, Northridge, Kowalchyk taught at Eastern Illinois University, where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program. She also served on the faculties of Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma. During the early 1980s, she taught at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music while maintaining her teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently holds an adjunct faculty position in piano at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations and taught piano pedagogy courses while coordinating the group piano program. His recognition includes the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). Murray State University honored him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Beyond his university work, Lancaster co-founded and operated a large independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma with his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, from 1981 to 1996. He directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which served pre-college students through combined group and private instruction. His professional service includes roles as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, plus 2020 National Conference Chair for that organization. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia recognized him as a Signature Sinfonian in 2013 for exemplary representation of the music fraternity as an alumnus.
