About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who profoundly shaped music pedagogy through his prolific output. Over his career, he authored 789 published works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications reached audiences across Germany, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and Spain, while he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas for an extended period.
Palmer's early life revealed exceptional musical talent. He performed piano on radio broadcasts at just 13 years old and studied both piano and accordion under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique fostered his improvisational abilities. He continued his musical development at Whitworth College and Millsaps College in Mississippi, performing regularly on radio and in campus ensembles before earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps.
His advanced training included a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany, followed by post-graduate work at the University of Houston. Palmer subsequently joined the University of Houston faculty as a music professor, where he established and taught the first successful college-level accordion courses for 18 years. His later scholarly focus turned to Classical and Baroque music research and pedagogy, establishing him as a recognized authority on Baroque ornamentation. This expertise formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983, and served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute while maintaining memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the company in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York. A skilled clarinetist and pianist, Manus transformed the family business that his father Sam had founded in 1922 from a Tin Pan Alley sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company.
Under Manus's leadership in the 1950s, Alfred Music developed groundbreaking instructional series beginning with accordion books, followed by guitar, piano, and recorder methods. The company expanded dramatically over the following decades, eventually outgrowing its New York headquarters. In 1975, the main office relocated to Los Angeles while the distribution center moved to upstate New York. By 2005, Alfred Music had acquired Warner Bros. Publications and secured rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a pianist and pedagogue best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most influential piano methods, alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned degrees from Northwestern University in piano performance and music education, plus a master's degree in piano performance. Her education included studies with renowned musicians such as James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice in major cities including New York, San Antonio, and Houston.
