About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose career spanned decades of innovative teaching and composition. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique enabled him to develop his distinctive improvisational style. His early musical foundation in both piano and accordion shaped the trajectory of his entire professional life.
Palmer's compositional output proved remarkably prolific, with 789 published works to his name. These include methods for accordion, piano, guitar, and Hammond Chord Organ alongside hundreds of solo pieces and choral compositions, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation earned him worldwide recognition and served as the foundation for the celebrated Alfred Masterworks publication series.
Throughout his academic career, Palmer taught at the University of Houston for 18 years, establishing the institution's first successful college accordion courses. He earned both a Doctor of Humanities degree (1971) and a Doctor of Music degree (1983) in recognition of his musicological research. Additionally, Palmer served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, while maintaining memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father, Sam, who founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era as a publisher of popular sheet music. In 1930, Sam merged his company with Alfred & Company to create Alfred Music, the organization that would become a global educational powerhouse under Morty's leadership.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is a pianist and pedagogy expert best known for co-authoring Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most influential piano method books, alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her Bachelor of Music degrees in Piano Performance and Music Education from Northwestern University, as well as a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her training included study with renowned musicians James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she collaborated with Dr. Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano. Her contributions to the field earned her recognition in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
