About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who authored 789 published compositions. His prolific output encompassed accordion methods, piano methods, organ instruction materials, guitar methods, numerous solo pieces, and choral works. Many of his publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical talent emerged early; he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13 and studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper piano technique fostered his improvisational abilities. He attended Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he performed accordion and piano on radio programs and with various ensembles. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, Palmer earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany. He later completed post-graduate work at the University of Houston and joined their music faculty, where he taught groundbreaking accordion courses for 18 years.
Palmer's scholarly work focused on Classical and Baroque music, establishing him as a world authority on Baroque ornamentation. His research formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological contributions. Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016, leading the company through decades of significant expansion and transformation. He joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York. A skilled clarinetist and pianist, Manus brought both musical knowledge and business acumen to his leadership role.
Under Manus's direction, Alfred Music evolved from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. Beginning in the 1950s, he spearheaded the development of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, establishing the foundation for the company's emergence as a leader in music education. The company's growth necessitated a major relocation in 1975, moving its main office to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York.
Manus's sons continued the family legacy, with Ron joining in 1988 and Steve in 1992. Together they expanded Alfred Music globally, opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. A Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, she brings decades of experience in both performance and music education to her work.
Her educational credentials include a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education degree, and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance, all from Northwestern University. She also holds an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond her foundational work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Dr. Lethco co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
