About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific output shaped music instruction across multiple instruments. Over his career, he created 789 published works spanning piano methods, guitar instruction, accordion methodology, organ guides, solo compositions, and choral pieces. His publications reached audiences worldwide through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish.
Palmer's scholarly contributions earned him recognition as a leading expert in Baroque music ornamentation, work that formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. His research and teaching excellence resulted in two advanced degrees: a Doctor of Humanities awarded in 1971 and a Doctor of Music in 1983. At the University of Houston, he pioneered college-level accordion instruction, teaching the program's first successful courses for eighteen years.
A gifted performer from childhood, Palmer played piano on radio broadcasts at age thirteen and studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique nurtured his natural improvisational gifts. His academic training included study at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, followed by advanced work at the Conservatory of Leipzig on scholarship. Beyond his teaching role at the University of Houston, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning his business degree from City College of New York. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company.
During the 1950s, Manus spearheaded the development of instructional materials across multiple instruments, beginning with an accordion series and expanding to guitar, piano, and recorder methods. Under his leadership, Alfred Music experienced substantial growth through the following decades, prompting a relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and the establishment of an upstate New York distribution center. In 2005, the company made a major acquisition by purchasing Warner Bros. Publications and securing rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, developed alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. A classically trained pianist, she earned three degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) and studied with renowned teachers including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice across multiple cities including New York, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. She earned an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and collaborated with Dr. Palmer on a second publication, Creating Music at the Piano.
