About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and musical genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his foundation through early study with pianist Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in piano technique and improvisation shaped his artistic path. His formative years included performances on piano and accordion during his college years at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, experiences that launched a lifetime of creative work.
Palmer's compositional and pedagogical output proved extraordinary, encompassing 789 published works across accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications reached international audiences through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. A respected authority on Baroque music ornamentation, Palmer's scholarly expertise formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. He received recognition for his musicological contributions through a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983.
Beyond composition and writing, Palmer maintained an active presence in music education and institutional leadership. He served for eighteen years on the music faculty at the University of Houston, where he established the first successful college-level accordion courses. As director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, he combined his scholarly pursuits with teaching, while also serving as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston. His professional affiliations included membership in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for nearly seven decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father, Sam Manus, who founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. Armed with a business degree from City College of New York, Morty joined the family business in the late 1940s and quickly transformed it from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education enterprise.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music expanded dramatically throughout the 1950s and beyond. He spearheaded the creation of instructional materials across multiple instruments, including accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. The company's growth necessitated a major move to Los Angeles in 1975, with distribution operations shifting to upstate New York. In 2005, Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications, securing rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and establishing a significant relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.
Manus's sons, Ron and Steve, continued the family legacy by joining the company in 1988 and 1992, respectively. Together they broadened Alfred Music's global reach by opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the internationally acclaimed piano method developed alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her degrees from Northwestern University, including a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance. Her studies also took her to prestigious institutions including Juilliard, where she worked with James Friskin, as well as Chicago Musical College and Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice in New York City, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and appears in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
