About the Composer: Willard A. Palmer
Dr. Willard A. Palmer was a prolific composer and pedagogue whose output spanned accordion, piano, guitar, and choral music across multiple languages and continents. His academic credentials included study at the Conservatory of Leipzig, Germany, and post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he taught the first successful college accordion courses for 18 years. Palmer's scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation earned him international recognition and shaped the foundation of the Alfred Masterworks series.
Beyond his compositional achievements, Palmer was a performing musician from childhood, playing piano and accordion on radio broadcasts starting at age 13. His teacher Mae Vardeman instilled in him the discipline of correct technique paired with improvisational freedom. Palmer served as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and remained a member of the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP throughout his career. His contributions to music education earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983.
