About the Arranger: Tom Gerou

Tom Gerou

Tom Gerou has established himself as a prolific arranger and composer with more than 160 published works to his name. His output spans reference texts (Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Essential Dictionary of Orchestration), educational curricula (Premier Piano Course: Great Music & Musicians), and numerous arrangements that have become standard fare in piano studios across the country. His piano arrangements appear throughout multiple Alfred's Basic Piano Library collections, including Greatest Hits, Patriotic Solos, Popular Hits, Praise Hits, and Top Hits.

Gerou holds a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Southern California and a Master of Music degree in composition from Yale University. His original compositions have earned recognition including two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for theatrical music, a Morton Gould Young Composer Award, two Rena Greenwald Awards, and a Jimmy McHugh Composition Prize. He has conducted workshops internationally across the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Why we love this

Gerou's arrangements capture the singability and emotional core of contemporary worship songs while respecting the technical boundaries of early intermediate pianists. Each piece fits seamlessly into the Alfred's Basic curriculum, correlating directly with the lesson book progression so students encounter new material at exactly the right pedagogical moment. The collection gives young pianists immediate access to music that matters in their own faith communities, which transforms practice from obligation into genuine musical purpose.

What to expect

These arrangements radiate warmth and accessibility. Melodies sit comfortably under the hand, harmonies support without overwhelming, and the spiritual intention of each song comes through in the writing. Playing through the collection feels like learning music that speaks to something beyond technique.

Who it's for

Early intermediate piano students (roughly 6-12 months into study) who are ready for material beyond basic exercises but benefit from guided technical development. This collection serves students in church music programs, faith-based homeschool settings, and private studios where contemporary Christian music reflects the student's musical identity and community.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the dynamic markings as your primary guide to musical shape; these songs thrive on gentle crescendos and thoughtful diminuendos rather than uniform volume.
  • Distinguish between the melody line (which students should voice with warmth) and accompaniment figures (which stay supportive and steady).
  • Allow rubato in the introductions and at phrase endings to create breathing room, especially in slower hymn-style arrangements.

How to use it

Use these pieces as performance material for church services, youth group events, or faith-focused recitals. Students can also learn them alongside the corresponding Alfred's Basic Lesson book level to reinforce technical concepts through repertoire they care about, bridging the gap between formal study and real-world musicmaking.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading within the grand staff across multiple positions
  • Playing chord progressions in the left hand (i, iv, v, and related harmonies)
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment textures
  • Sustaining musical phrasing over longer phrases
  • Interpreting dynamic markings to shape line
  • Coordinating both hands independently across different rhythmic patterns
