About the Arranger: Gayle Kowalchyk

Gayle Kowalchyk

Gayle Kowalchyk brings three decades of piano pedagogy expertise to her work as an arranger and co-author of educational materials. She holds degrees in piano performance from Ohio University and Northwestern University, and earned her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her teaching career spans California State University, Northridge, Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma, along with summers spent directing piano programs at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.

A recognized voice in piano education, Kowalchyk has presented clinics and workshops at national conventions of MTNA, MENC, and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. With her husband, E. L. Lancaster, she has co-authored over 300 educational piano publications, including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. Her work bridges the gap between rigorous pedagogy and music that engages young students.

Why we love this

These arrangements honor the melodies students already know while respecting the technical constraints of Level 1 study. Kowalchyk and her colleagues have reshaped contemporary worship music into pieces that fit seamlessly into early-level curriculum without sacrificing musicality or meaning. Studios and group piano classes gain access to repertoire that motivates young pianists because the songs matter to them and their families.

What to expect

Playing these arrangements feels like stepping into a musical community. The melodies are comforting and familiar, yet the Level 1 writing keeps technical demands low so students can focus on bringing warmth and sincerity to the music. Each piece unfolds gently, inviting the young pianist to shape the melody without feeling overwhelmed by accompaniment complexity.

Who it's for

Beginning piano students (Level 1A and 1B) who need accessible arrangements of music they care about. Teachers using Alfred's Basic Piano Library Lesson Book Complete Level 1 will find page-by-page correlation that makes integration effortless. Families seeking supplementary repertoire that connects to their faith community will value having recognizable worship songs available in early-level formats.

How to get the most out of it

  • Play the accompaniment patterns evenly and gently so the melody voice stands out clearly. Let your left hand establish a steady pulse without drawing attention.
  • Practice hands separately until you can play each part smoothly, then bring them together slowly. This builds confidence and prevents rushing through unfamiliar chord changes.
  • Listen to the original recording of each song to internalize the melody's natural phrasing and character, then apply that shape to your Level 1 arrangement.
  • Pay attention to the dynamic markings even in simpler pieces. A soft opening followed by a slight swell can make these songs feel more expressive and intentional.

How to use it

Assign pieces from this collection as supplementary repertoire alongside the Alfred's Lesson Book to maintain student engagement between formal lessons. Churches and faith-based schools can use these arrangements for student recitals, worship services, or family music nights. Group piano classes benefit from having contemporary Christian music available at entry level, creating natural bridges between secular and sacred repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing simple melodic lines with consistent finger independence
  • Coordinating two-hand patterns where the left hand provides steady rhythmic accompaniment
  • Reading and executing basic dynamic markings (soft, medium, loud)
  • Sustaining musical phrasing over short phrases using legato and appropriate articulation
  • Building sight-reading fluency through repeated exposure to familiar melodies in notated form
