About the Arranger: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has been a cornerstone of educational piano publishing since joining Alfred Music in 1986, accumulating over 400 compositions and recordings that have established him as one of the most widely performed composers of pedagogical piano music. His teaching career spanned decades, including 24 years at the University of Montana as piano pedagogy faculty and later appointments at California State University campuses; he has also maintained an active schedule as a clinician, adjudicator, and touring artist, performing recitals and master classes across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Alexander's work reflects his deep understanding of what students need at each level. A Kansas native and University of Kansas graduate, he continues to compose from his home in Albuquerque while maintaining collaborations with Alfred Music. His arrangements and original works are fixtures in piano studios, festivals, and competitions worldwide, shaped by his experience as both a performer and pedagogue.

Why we love this

Alexander's patriotic arrangements strike the right balance between recognizable melodies and genuine musicality at Level 2. Each piece is tailored to what students can actually execute at this stage, with clear fingerings and thoughtful voicings that never talk down to young players. The inclusion of lyrics opens doors for integration with singing or family performances, making these pieces feel purposeful beyond the lesson plan.

What to expect

Patriotic music carries a sense of occasion and tradition, and these straightforward arrangements honor that without overwhelming young hands. There's a natural lift and dignity to melodies like "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful" even when simplified, and students often feel proud performing music that connects to something larger than themselves.

Who it's for

Young piano students at Level 2 of Alfred's Basic Piano Library who are ready for repertoire beyond their lesson book pages. These arrangements work equally well for students preparing festival selections, assembling a recital program, or exploring familiar American music in a structured way.

How to get the most out of it

  • Encourage students to notice where the melody sits in the right hand and think about bringing it forward slightly, letting the left hand provide supportive accompaniment rather than competing for attention.
  • Have students identify the sections that repeat and use that awareness to build confidence; recognizing patterns makes the piece feel shorter and more manageable.
  • Explore the words alongside the music before the first full run-through. Understanding the patriotic themes and historical context helps young players shape phrases with more intention.
  • Keep tempo steady but unhurried. At Level 2, these arrangements are designed to sound full at a moderate pace; rushing often obscures the beauty of the melody.

How to use it

Program one of these pieces during July and August lessons or for a summer recital; the patriotic theme creates a natural seasonal context. These arrangements also pair nicely with historical units in school music classes or with family gatherings where singalongs blend solo piano performance with group participation.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing melodies with lyrical phrasing and shape
  • Coordinating independent left and right hand patterns in simple textures
  • Maintaining steady tempo while navigating moderate ranges across both staves
  • Recognizing and executing repeated sections with confidence
  • Connecting musical interpretation to textual meaning and historical context
