Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk teaches class piano, piano, and piano pedagogy at California State University, Northridge, bringing decades of experience in both performance and instruction. She earned her D.M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University with a focus on piano pedagogy, along with performance degrees from Ohio University and Northwestern University. Before her current position, she directed piano preparatory programs and coordinated class piano instruction at Eastern Illinois University, and taught at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma.
Kowalchyk is a recognized clinician and presenter at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Working alongside her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has authored over 300 educational piano publications, including the widely adopted Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts series. Her studio teaching experience from 1981 to 1996 directly informed her understanding of how students learn notation and technique at every level.
