About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano professor at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her B.M. in piano performance from Ohio University, her M.M. in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated the class piano program at Eastern Illinois, directed its piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. Her summers from 1979 to 1982 were spent teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
A sought-after clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, National Piano Teachers Institute, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She has co-authored more than 300 educational piano publications with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, including the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She operated an independent studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996 and now serves as a clinician for Alfred Music in the Los Angeles area.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University.
Throughout his career at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music who specialized in piano pedagogy and group piano instruction. He founded both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy at OU in 1980, mentoring more than 50 doctoral candidates in this field. His teaching excellence earned him multiple institutional recognitions, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received a David Ross Boyd Professorship, an honor bestowed on faculty who demonstrate exceptional dedication to teaching and student mentorship.
Beyond his university work, Dr. Lancaster led the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, where he taught pre-college students through combined group and private lessons. From 1981 to 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. His service to the music education profession included roles as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He has also been active in the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy and received the 2013 Signature Sinfonian award from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Murray State University honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2014.
