About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer was an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned multiple instruments and genres. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his artistic foundation through early study with Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique enabled him to develop his improvisational gifts. His formative years included studies at Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he continued performing accordion and piano on local radio broadcasts and ensembles.
Palmer's scholarly and compositional output proved extraordinary. He published 789 works encompassing accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction, Hammond Chord Organ technique, solo pieces, and choral compositions, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His expertise in Baroque music ornamentation earned him worldwide recognition and became the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983.

He served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas and taught at the University of Houston, where he pioneered the first successful college accordion courses during his eighteen-year tenure. As a director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and devoted scholar of Classical and Baroque music, Palmer was respected within professional circles including the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the family business in the late 1940s, shortly after earning his business degree from City College of New York. A accomplished clarinetist and pianist, Manus transformed the company from a Tin Pan Alley sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education resource.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music expanded dramatically throughout the second half of the twentieth century. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that became industry standards. The company grew so substantially that its New York headquarters could no longer accommodate operations; in 1975, the main office relocated to Los Angeles while a distribution center opened in upstate New York.
Manus's sons, Ron and Steve, continued the family legacy by joining Alfred Music in 1988 and 1992 respectively. Together they broadened the company's international presence by opening offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK. In 2005, Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications, securing rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and establishing a partnership with Warner/Chappell Music.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most respected piano methods, which she developed alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned degrees from Northwestern University in piano performance and music education, along with a master's degree in piano performance. Her advanced studies took her to prestigious institutions including Juilliard, where she worked with James Friskin; Chicago Musical College under Rudolph Ganz; and Columbia University with Douglas Moore.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice across major cities including New York, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. Beyond her published works, she co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer and earned an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
