About the Composer: Willard A. Palmer

Dr. Willard A. Palmer published 789 compositions across multiple instruments and genres, from accordion and piano methods to guitar works and choral pieces. His scholarship in Baroque music and ornamentation became internationally recognized, earning him honorary doctorates in Humanities (1971) and Music (1983) and establishing him as a leading authority in the field.
Palmer's teaching career spanned decades, including 18 years on the faculty at the University of Houston where he pioneered college-level accordion instruction. His work as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and his role as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute reflected his deep commitment to both performance and musicological research. His compositions have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, cementing his influence on music education worldwide.
Why we love this
Palmer's decades of teaching experience shine through in how these carols progress logically without sacrificing musicality. The included teacher duets transform practice into genuine ensemble playing, making holiday repertoire feel like real music-making rather than a graded exercise, and giving beginners immediate context for their new skills.
What to expect
These arrangements capture the warmth and familiarity of beloved Christmas melodies while staying within the reach of tiny hands and developing technique. Each carol unfolds with clarity and charm, offering students the joy of playing music they already know.
Who it's for
This book is designed for early-stage piano students (ages 4-8 or those in their first months of study) who are ready to play recognizable holiday music. It works equally well in private studios, group lessons, or paired learning situations where a teacher or parent can provide the duet accompaniment.
How to get the most out of it
- Play the teacher duet part during practice sessions so your student hears the carol's full harmonic context, not just their own melody line. This transforms solo practice into collaborative music-making.
- Use the duet parts to adjust tempo to your student's comfort level; a slower, secure rendition with the accompaniment sounds more musical than a faster solo.
- Balance the melody line so it sings over the duet accompaniment without pushing for volume; focus on legato touch and consistent tone instead.
- Begin rehearsing the easier carols first to build confidence, then layer in the progressively more challenging pieces as your student's facility grows.
How to use it
Assign carols throughout the fall and early winter as supplementary repertoire that reinforces technical concepts from your method book in a seasonal context. Students can perform carols at studio recitals, holiday concerts, or family gatherings, creating performance opportunities that motivate continued practice.
