About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally respected musician, educator, and scholar who created nearly 800 published compositions. His prolific output spans accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction books, organ materials, solo pieces, and choral works available in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish translations. For many years, he also served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's distinguished career began early, with radio performances at age 13 and piano studies under Mae Vardeman, who taught him foundational technique while cultivating his improvisation skills. He attended Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he continued performing accordion and piano on radio broadcasts and campus ensembles. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, a two-year scholarship brought him to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany. His later academic work at the University of Houston led to his groundbreaking tenure as the first successful instructor of college-level accordion courses, teaching there for 18 years.
Palmer earned international recognition as a leading authority on Baroque music ornamentation and Classical music research. His scholarship formed the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks publication series. The University of Houston honored his contributions with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. As director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and member of the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Palmer remained deeply engaged with the musical community throughout his career.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father, Sam Manus, who founded it in 1922 as Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Morton joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York.
Under Morton's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. Beginning in the 1950s, he spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that became industry standards. The company's expansion was remarkable; by the mid 1970s, growth necessitated relocating the main office to Los Angeles in 1975 while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York.

She served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and brought her expertise to countless students through private teaching in New York City, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston.
Her educational credentials include degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) as well as an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. She studied with renowned musicians including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco presented recitals across the United States and served as a clinician at conventions nationwide.
